Wellbeing for Learning
Aboriginal Education at St Joseph’s
At St Joseph’s, our Aboriginal Education Staff play a central role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, their families, staff, and the broader school community.
Working closely with teachers, the Wellbeing Team, and the Learning Support Team, the Aboriginal Education Teacher (AET) and the Aboriginal Education Support Assistant (AESA) ensures Aboriginal perspectives are authentically embedded across the curriculum. They also support staff in understanding cultural protocols, help coordinate significant cultural events, and collaborate with external organisations to provide students with academic support and pathways for future opportunities.
The AET and the AESA helps build strong connections between Aboriginal students, their families, the school, and the wider community, promoting positive wellbeing, engagement, and a strong sense of belonging. The Ngurra space is a culturally safe space for all students.
Students at St Joseph’s are encouraged to take part in a variety of cultural and educational opportunities supported by the AET, such as:
- Reconciliation Week celebration and activities
- Annual Welcome Smoking Ceremony
- National Sorry Day
- NAIDOC Week Celebration and activities
- Harmony Day Celebration
- Recognising important dates of reflection
- Embracing Aboriginal perspectives throughout the new curriculums.
