Creative & Performing Arts

Our innovative programs in drama, music, dance and visual arts spark creativity and build confidence in a supportive, vibrant community. From dynamic classroom projects to captivating stage performances, each opportunity is designed to nurture talent, inspire collaboration, and celebrate every student’s artistic journey.

Vocal Ensemble

St Joseph’s has a strong tradition of choral excellence. Our College Choir gives students with a passion for singing their chance to sing exciting and varied repertoire, develop aural awareness and confidence through performance.

Vocal Ensemble is conducted by Ms Dixon. Music teachers plan performance and learning opportunities including workshops, excursions, CAPA nights and eisteddfods. In the past, under the direction of Phillip Rees, students have participated in The Australian National Eisteddfod in Canberra, (where they have won awards), singing in concerts with The Central Coast Philharmonia, performing in concerts with Chatswood High, James Morrision, Northholm Grammar School and workshops with The Idea of North.

At St Joseph’s, our Vocal Ensemble embraces service learning by sharing their voices at nursing homes, retirement villages, and at Mary Mac’s in Woy Woy. Their performances at Liturgies and Masses greatly enrich our college community. With a proud legacy of excellence, St Joseph’s Choir has repeatedly secured first place at the Central Coast Eisteddfod in the past and has even toured in New Zealand.

Rehearsal is Thursday mornings from 8:20am – 9:00am in Shekinah. There is no cost.

Joey’s Eddie’s Concert band

At St Joseph’s, we enjoy a strong partnership with the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music and St Edward’s College. Our concert band, much like the bands in our feeder primary schools, is part of the Conservatorium School Bands Program and is conducted by Dr Phillip Rutherford. Since its inception, we have collaborated closely with St Edward’s to form a larger, unified concert band.

All students who learn an instrument—whether within the college or beyond—are invited to join and there is no cost involved. Our ensemble welcomes a diverse range of musical experiences, and no audition is required to participate. Currently, our concert band features a variety of instruments, including flute, keyboard, clarinet, both alto saxophones, trumpet, trombone, bass, and percussion.

Performance opportunities for our concert band include:

  • Christmas performance at Erina Fair
  • College Presentation Night
  • Liturgies & Masses
  • Visits to nursing homes and retirement villages

On occasion our concert band has performed in college productions and CAPA nights. Students meet with St Edward’s concert band students once a week on Monday at lunchtime to rehearse. New members are always welcome to join.  students once a week at lunchtime to rehearse. New members are always welcome to join.

Private Instrumental Tuition

At St Joseph’s, we take great pride in the strong relationships we maintain with experienced instrumental and vocal coaches. Our expanding instrumental tuition program offers one-on-one lessons tailored to students at every level—from newcomers to advanced players. Lessons are scheduled during the school day between 8.30 am and 3.00 pm, with timing arranged in consultation with the tutor, parent, and student. Where possible, lesson times are rotated to avoid missing consecutive classes. Lesson costs vary and are negotiated directly between families and the respective private teacher.

If your daughter is interested in learning a musical instrument at school, please contact our Music teachers, who will be delighted to assist you in securing existing lessons or sourcing a teacher for your chosen instrument.

Currently the following occur onsite:

  • Private flute lessons with Rosalie Bourne
  • Guitar, ukulele and bass lessons with Trent Crawford
  • Singing lessons with Liam Burrows
  • Piano lessons with Hannah from Coast Academy of Music

Musicals

The College has a rich history of musical productions and many have been produced with St Edward’s College. These are done every second year. Frozen (2025) and Matilda (2023) were the latest productions. Over the years the College has been involved in Back to the Eighties, How the West was Warped, The Great Australian Rock Musical, Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz and Bugsy Malone just to name a few. Musicals foster teamwork, collaboration and creativity.
